Masters Photos

Bill Brandt

Bill Brandt was a German born photographer who decided to take up photography when he was battling tuberculosis in a hospital in Switzerland. He was born inMay 2, 1904 in Hamburg. Although he began as a painter, he developed an interest in photography during the time he spent in that hospital in Switzerland. He traveled through Europe and learned photography from other famous photographers such as Man Ray in Paris, France. He moved to London England but traveled throughout his life taking pictures of the people. Brandt specialized in night and portrait photography along with close up of different body parts. He would also photograph people in their natural environment along with famous people during that time.

Our group chose Bill Brandt as our photographer because his photos are amazing. He inspired us to work with light and shadow and how it affects the photo. We attempted to mimic his style by adding the black and white affect. We also attempted to mimic the way he did the close up photos of the eyes and hands but also portrait pictures of the subject directing her eyes in a different directions. We took pictures of ourselves but also our schools homecoming queen who is well known throughout our school by many of the students and staff.

Photographer

Bill Brandt

Bill Brandt's uses the light and shadow effect on some of his photographs. He takes portraits of people and I like his variety about the different poses and eye direction of his subject. Some of them are looking directly at the camera but at different angles. The rest are looking away into a different direction, looking something that is not seen within the photo. He also photographs people in their natural environment performing their day by day tasks such as the maids and servants. Other photographs include people facing the other way, their faces a mystery because they can't be seen. He works with light and shadow, some of his photographs contain subjects with black shadows that obscure parts of their faces making it difficult to see the whole face of the subject. Some his photos are natural while the rest are staged or posed. He also does close up photography when he took closes up photos of the subjects eyes, ears, hands, and legs.

Artistic Review - Photographer's Website

                                      Bryan Farley dot com

Photography in it's own way is a form of art. Like artists, photographers have an artistic view of the world in which they capture that once in a life time moment with one shot of the camera because that is their artistic tool much like how an artists tools include the paint brush and a pencil. A photographer is also like a writer, they have some sort of a message to convey to their viewers about something but not using words, they use images that they have captured. Bryan Farley, a photography teacher at Pittsburg Senior, present a portfolio containing a variety of photographs of different subjects. I like his photos because the capture those simple moments in everyday life and those once in a life time moments but I believe that the way he presents his photos in blog could be better.

Bryan Farley's photos convey a variety of subjects such as sports, special occasions, culture, music, nature, etc. I personally like the tennis and seeing kids play the sport since it's not a widely played sport like football and basketball. I also enjoy the nature pictures because these are scenes that aren't available to the city folk or they just don't pay much attention to it. It's nice to see nature rather than the usual expanding urban and suburban scenery.

Although the photos are great, the display and theme of the blog could be better in order to display the photos. The blog is plain and doesn't display much originality besides the photographs themselves. Perhaps changing the theme and back ground would make the blog more attractive and eye catching. Overall the blog is good but it could be better if the theme were to change and the structure of the blog were to change as well.

Cropping for Better composition Part 2

Before

After
The cropped photo illustrates the texture rule of composition because it shows the texture of the pillar in the background. It also shows the texture of the subjects hair, necklace, lip piercing, her dimples, and her shirt along with her eyebrows and skin.

Cropping for Better Composition-Advanced Photo

The cropped photo illustrates the lines rule of composition because of theBlue and pink lines on the plastic in the background along with the beam in the background and the arm of the little girl in the front would also count as a line.

Composition

Fill in the Frame

Fill in the frame is when the whole frame of the photo is filled with the image and that there is little to no empty space. We chose this composition because it was one that we randomly picked and it's one that we haven't really done before so we were interested in trying to employ this composition to our photography.

Yosemite and Photography

Who makes the most interesting photographs of Yosemite now?
Ansel Adams makes the most interesting photographs of Yosemite.

How are the images created?
These images are created by the light. Photographers perch themselves in a certain location and point there cameras to the subject of the photograph and take the photo when the light is just about right for them.

Are photographers paid to photograph Yosemite?
Whether photographer get paid for photographing Yosemite depends if whether the photographer is independent and just wants take photos or if the park itself hired a photographer to take photos of the park.

If you were photographing Yosemite, what would you do?
If I were photographing Yosemite, I would just wander around the park and just get lost in the scenery and take photos of the interesting and beautiful landscape.

What would you want to do?
I would like to take photos of Yosemite because I enjoy photographing nature and its beauty. I would like to photograph Yosemite beautiful landscape.

Eiffel Tower vs. Photo Booth

What has more significance, the Eiffel Tower or the first photo booth. Both inventions have had a major impact. Although I believe that the Eiffel Tower has more of a significance than the photo booth because It's a one of a kind architectural land mark. There are many photo booths around the world but only one Eiffel Tower. Modern day technology such as the front view camera on cell phones has allowed people to take pictures easily and quick. Not many photo booths are seen around the world and soon they maybe surpassed by much more advanced modern technology. Soon the photo booth will become a mere antique. The Eiffel Tower on the other hand is a proud land mark that will stand for years to come and has been a famous attraction to everyone around the world. People from many places come to visit the city of paris to see the Eiffel tower.

Comic Book: I like this filter because I like the pixel effect that it makes

Black and White: I like this filter because it a portrays a mood of boredness and sadness. It also remind me of the old days when pictures weren't in color.

Pop Art: I like this filter because it's colorful.

Color Pencil: I like this filter Because I like the pencil effect.

Glow:I like this filter because of the glow effect that it makes and how it portrays light and dark.

Composition of Photography

The website digital-photography-school demonstrates the five elements of  composition for photography. These rules are familiar from the ones I was taught in photo one. the five elements are pattern, symmetry, texture, depth of field, and lines. These elements are used or seen in photography. Their helpful rules on how to take "good" photos. On the other hand the website photographymad. demomnstrates 10 rules for composition, 5 rules more than the previous website. Nonetheless it was technically a review for me since I learned most of the stuff in photo one. the last website photo.tutsplus goes into even more depth with 14 rules. Some were similar if not the same as the rules of the previous websites but it includes other helpful rules such as the one were it advices not to be perfect because photos may not come out the way you like them but sometimes it comes out better.

Assignment #1: Looking at Light

The overall feeling of having people stare at you or staring at someone in silence is just awkward. It was one of those awkward moments. I had to actually stare at my partners stand under a sky light and study the light showering them from above. One of my partners was wearing a black shirt which absorbed the light. From the angle that I was staring at her from, the light was most visible at the top part of head and the faded into shadow at the bottom. Another one of my partners was wearing a white shirt which reflected the light to her face creating a more light effect, diluting the shadows. My next partner was wearing a peach shirt which created an effect similar to that of the white shirt but less. From the angle that I was looking at her, I could only see the side of her face that the light hit while the other side was obscured from my vision. My other partner was wearing glasses which reflected the light but also, it created a shadow on her face, the outlining of the glasses. My final partner was wearing leopard print blazer, I didn't really notice much of an effect on the light.
